Chap Goh Meh is the 15th night and the culmination of the Chinese New Year celebrations.

On the night of Chap Goh Meh, unmarried girls will throw tangerines in the sea or river in the belief that they will be able to marry good husbands.

In conjunction with the celebrations, the Straits Quay Retail Marina held its annual Chap Goh Meh celebration with the attendance of thousands of celebrants.

The event saw five bachelors each fishing out a mandarin orange from the Andaman Sea in hopes of finding their fair ladies.

The mandarin oranges were tossed into the sea by female revellers earlier during the evening as part of the highly-anticipated event marking the end of the Chinese New Year celebrations.

Taking turns to call out the numbers inked on the fruits, the successful suitors were then paired off and invited to the promenade for interactive games.
The couples had a great time outdoing each other and brought home not just exciting prizes but, as some would say, potential life partners too.

Thunderous firecrackers marked the last day of Chinese New Year  with shutterbugs busy clicking away shots and videos of the grand fireworks display overlooking the iconic floating stage.

Straits Quay marketing manager Gillian Tan said the celebration was aimed at promoting the rich cultures of Penang and keeping them alive among the younger generation.

“Chap Goh Meh, also known as the Chinese Valentine’s Day, plays a significant role in Penang Chinese culture where numerous ‘young maidens’ were paired with eligible bachelors through the tossing and scooping of the mandarin orange,” she said.

Other programmes taking over the stage throughout the night were the spring dance party, modern and cultural dance performances, a drum performance and a LED acrobatic lion dance performance.

Children were also entertained by various hands-on traditional workshops.
The festive mood was further hyped up by a special appearance of the Three Star Deities (Fu Lu Shou).
