The Penang state government has decided to extend the waiver of the Hotel Fee until June 2021.

The gesture is to alleviate the hardship faced by the hospitality in view of the Covid-19 pandemic.

State exco for Tourism and Digital Economy, Yeoh Soon Hin said that the state government hopes that the gesture will help the industry recover.

“We understand that the hospitality is going through some difficult times and we hope to play our part during these testing times.

“The earlier waiver for the sector was from July 31 to Dec 31, 2020,” said Yeoh in a press statement.

He also said that the state government understands the hardship faced by the tourism and hospitality industry and hopes that the gesture will help alleviate some of their challenges.

The Hotel fee is charged at RM3 per room/per night for 4-star and 5-star hotels, RM2 per room/per night for 3-star hotels / dormitory / budget and hostels.

Meanwhile, when contacted the Malaysian Association of Hotels (MAH Penang Chapter) chairman, Raj Kumar in welcoming the move added that the association had earlier requested for the waiver till next year.

“Nevertheless, we are glad to hear the news. Despite the amount being small due to low hotel room occupancies currently, we hope when things get better, it will help the industry overall.

“In the meantime, we also wish to show our appreciation and gratitude to the state government for their understanding on the plight of the hotels,” said Raj.
