Fine crystal Riedel glasses to enjoy your fine wine

When you have a bottle of fine wine to enjoy, it should be served in classy, beautiful glasses to savour the moment.

 
This is where Austrian made Riedel glasses come into play. They are known as the “Rolls Royce” among wine glasses.  
 
They were established in 1756 and the well known brand has a 270 years history of making handcrafted or machine made glasses.
 
To-date, 11 generations of the Riedel family are into making these wine crystal glasses.
 
It is a whole new world out there when one talks about these collector item glasses.
 
Obviously, there are hand made glasses which are quite expensive meant for the wine aficionados and private collectors.
 
Otherwise, there are other Riedel glasses meant for hotels and fine dining restaurants.
 
Asiaeuro Wine & Spirits Northern Region sales manager, William Chong took time off from his busy schedule to enlighten this writer on the intricate history and techniques of these crystal glasses.

“There are also handmade sommelier glasses which are priced around RM688 onwards. 
 
(For the uninitiated a sommelier is a trained and knowledgeable wine professional, normally working in fine restaurants, who specializes in all aspects of wine service as well as  wine and food pairings.
 
“Serious wine enthusiasts buy these sommeliers glasses for their private and personal use at home or for very special events,” said Chong.
 
He next put the writer through a quick crash course to differentiate how the wine tastes when using different glasses.
 
“Be it a rock glass, normal wine glass or the Riedel glass, the fine wine will taste differently. There lies the proof of these glasses.

The striking difference between Riedel glasses is that they are made from crystal and are thin with great contours. Each glass has the Riedel brand name embossed on the base of the glass.
 
The famous brand also produces glasses for champagne,spirits, juices, cocktails, water, beer, tequila, cognac and many more. They also come with a wide range of crystal decanters which helps the wine breathe before it is consumed.
