Nurses are unsung heroes

Many a time, the International Nurses Day (May 12) is observed without much fuss or fanfare.
But this year, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, they are now the frontliners against the “battle” and are being hailed as the unsung heroes all over the world.
The pandemic has revealed to the world how vital are nurses, doctors, lab technicians and other medical staff play at this moment.
We had the opportunity to speak to two ladies from this profession who shared their experience, motivation and thoughts.

Choke Ann Ann, 37, Care Professional with Homage Malaysia.
1) Why did you get into the nursing profession?
I was very active in first-aid related co-curricular activities when I was still in my secondary school. This led me to have tremendous interest in the healthcare industry. Plus, my late father was a dialysis patient which triggered me to learn more in caring for him. Moreover, the training mode of the nursing course was just appropriate with bonding and financial support provided by a local private hospital. My family was also not able to support me financially for my tertiary study and therefore, nursing was a choice where I could create a better future for myself.
2) What are your views about being a nurse in these times during a pandemic?
Nurses are playing very important roles in all aspects of care as a whole.
3) How do you keep yourself safe from contamination or exposure of family members during a care visit?
Assessment and health education could be done for patients and family members. Abide strictly to the recommended precautions: wear a mask all the time, practise hand hygiene very frequently, keep social distancing 1 meter from strangers. Follow rules and instructions set by Homage.
4) Who offers moral support in your family?
My husband, son, mother, siblings and relatives do offer me their moral support. They also provide me with all aspects of care and comfort whenever I need to be on nursing duties.
5) What is one lesson we can all learn from this pandemic?
Stay calm and abide tightly to recommended rules and regulations. Provide the right and factual health education to families in helping to understand the situation and act appropriately. I believe that if everyone plays a responsible role in thinking about the best for every individual, we can fight the pandemic.

Suguna, 38, Care Professional with Homage Malaysia.
1) Why did you get into the nursing profession?
I have always had the passion to be in a profession where I can help others. During my teenage years, I had an interest in crime scene series and story books. I tried to enroll in the police force several times but failed. Feeling down for not being able to get into the police force, I had lost hope of pursuing my dream to help people in need. In 2002, I was encouraged by my uncle, who is a GP, to enrol in nursing. Even then, I never actually had interest in this profession. It was only whilst caring for a cancer patient in 2006, that I had actually loved it and realised I could make a difference in the life of the patient I cared for.
2) What are your views about being a nurse in these times during a pandemic?
Nurses in general hardly receive much recognition from the community due to the stigma it’s given; dirty job, job fit for females only, under-paid job. However, it is during times like this is when I’m proud to be called a nurse. Nurses are the backbone of a medical facility. They work just as hard as doctors and other front liners to care for the ill, constantly putting their lives at risk when dealing with patients. Needless to say, they have to always be prepared to assist the doctors during rounds and emergencies. I’m a strong believer that nurses are the pillars in the healthcare industry.
3) How do you keep yourself safe from contamination or exposure of family members during a care visit?
Assessment and education for family members, wearing masks and practicing hand hygiene during visits. Homage has a platform where Care Pros can share and relay any concern or suggestion that can be improved or looked into during each visit. Homage has supportive operators whom I can always contact and share my concerns with, on my visits. They would proceed to investigate and update me on the findings.
4) Who offers moral support in your family?
I can’t name a specific person in this. Every member in my family has supported me during different times in different ways. One thing I could say is that, I wouldn’t be the person I am today, without my family.
5) What is one lesson we can all learn from this pandemic?
Practicing good hygiene as well as adhering to the health ministry’s recommendation. At times, we tend to divert from what should we do, thinking we would not get affected by the pandemic failing to see our irresponsible action could harm the next person, or our loved ones. Continuing to adhere to the health ministry’s recommendation even after MCO will certainly prevent spreading of this pandemic.
