Standing at an impressive 6ft 5in, Sacha Timaeus naturally commands attention whenever he enters a room. But beyond his towering presence, it is his passion and deep knowledge of fine wine that truly captivate audiences.
The Export Manager for Torbreck Vintners from Australia recently made his first visit to Penang, where he hosted an exclusive wine dinner at the iconic Eastern & Oriental Hotel, presenting an exceptional range of Torbreck wines to local enthusiasts and connoisseurs.
Interestingly, Sacha’s connection to Malaysia stretches back generations. His great-grandparents once lived here, although those family ties have long since faded. Today, his visits are driven by a different purpose — promoting some of Australia’s most celebrated wines across the region.
In many ways, Sacha’s journey into the world of wine began before he was even born. His father had purchased a bottle of 1970 Quinta do Noval Nacional with the intention of sharing it with his son one day — a promise that was finally fulfilled in 2019, creating a memorable milestone in his wine journey.
While the Barossa Valley remains home, Sacha has spent considerable time overseas, living and working in the United Kingdom, Mexico and France. He holds a Master of Arts (Honours) in Spanish from the University of Edinburgh, a Master of Science in Wine Business from the École Supérieure de Commerce de Dijon (now the Burgundy School of Business), and the prestigious WSET Level 4 Diploma.
Before joining Torbreck Vintners, Sacha spent a decade promoting Australian fine wines on the international stage, serving as Export Manager for both Kaesler and Yarra Yering.
Despite his demanding travel schedule, he maintains a keen interest in sports. Given his height, it comes as little surprise that he plays basketball and remains an enthusiastic follower of rugby union. He is also a classically trained percussionist and drummer, although he jokes that he rarely finds time to play these days — much to the relief of his neighbours in the Barossa Valley.
“I find Penang a wonderful place to visit, especially for its food. Even during my short stay, I had the opportunity to sample some of the local cuisine and thoroughly enjoyed the experience,” he said.
His Malaysian tour also includes stops in Johor Bahru, Kota Kinabalu and Kuching as he continues to strengthen Torbreck’s presence in the market.
Meanwhile, guests at the E&O wine dinner were treated to an impressive portfolio of labels throughout the evening, including the Torbreck Woodcutter’s Semillon 2023, Torbreck Cuvée Juveniles Blanc 2023, Torbreck The Steading Blanc 2023, Torbreck The Factor 2021 and Torbreck Descendant 2021.
The evening not only showcased the craftsmanship and heritage of Torbreck Vintners but also offered guests an opportunity to engage with one of Australia’s leading wine ambassadors, whose passion for wine continues to take him across the globe.
