For the past three decades, Frenchman Xavier B. A. Guichard has quietly but profoundly shaped Malaysia’s wine landscape.
Having made Malaysia his home for over 30 years, Xavier is widely regarded as one of the pioneers who introduced and championed French wines in the country—long before wine appreciation became mainstream among Malaysian consumers be it for the personal consumer or the hospitality industry..
At a time when French wine was still a niche product, Xavier recognized Malaysia’s untapped potential and took on the challenge of building a market from the ground up
“I was in Japan taking care of the wine import division of a French company. After a few years I went back to Paris to the head office and I mentioned to my boss that I would be ready to be an expatriate again. One day he called and said that they have some issues with our import office in Kuala Lumpur and asked me if I would agree to go there to check what could be done and tentatively save the company, they gave me one year to succeed, which I did,” said Xavier when met at The St Regis Langkawi recently.
That was in 1994 and the rest is history.
“I stayed in Malaysia because it was a great experience for me here. I started importing wine and after a year my wine division was as big as my food division. Then the company was sold , so I decided to leave and I joined a wine producer with whom I worked, to be their local office for Asia. I traveled extensively in all of Asia. Malaysia was a good place to stay as we can easily reach all Asian countries and the cost of running an office is much cheaper than in Singapore or Hong Kong,” added Xavier.
He recalled that the biggest challenge when I started was to educate my customers how to handle the wines.
“Wine is a living product in the bottle, this means it is sensitive to temperature, vibrations, smell etc. Most importers and outlets did not properly store the wines. No temperature controlled storage, and often the wines got oxidized. During my first trip in Langkawi all the champagnes I tasted were oxidized and the funny thing is that people liked it as it was a normal taste for them. That is why I started the storage with Alfred Low of S. H Maju Sdn Bhd to properly store the wines,” he said.
With deep roots in French wine culture and an unwavering belief in quality, he played a pivotal role in importing, educating, and cultivating appreciation for French wines among hoteliers, restaurateurs, sommeliers, and discerning consumers across Malaysia.
He also added that wine is not alcohol, it is a drink with some alcohol and it does accompany meals. Food and wine pairing is very important to understand. We must be humble when we study the wine world, and should not be shy, the most important is to enjoy it .
“We do not all have the same taste, some people prefer certain wine profiles, others prefer different styles. So we need to open our mind to analyse the variety of wines that nature offers us,” says Xavier.
His extensive network, encyclopaedic knowledge of French terroirs and ability to open doors across the industry have made him a central figure in Malaysia’s wine trade. If French wine has a godfather in Malaysia, many would say it is Xavier.
Beyond business, Xavier has been a tireless ambassador for French culture, sharing not just bottles but stories—of vineyards, generations of winemakers, and the art of living well. His passion has helped raise standards in wine selection, storage and service, while inspiring a new generation of wine professionals in Malaysia.
He flies to France twice per year, for family and of course to visit his wine growers.
“Music is my major hobby, my dream was to be a rock star. I play the guitar and the piano, though I am not a great player but it helps me a lot. I also like reading and of course sharing my experiences with wine lovers, wine growers, it reminds me that Nature is incredibly beautiful and full of mystery. A great wine is a gift for all of us.
Xavier has known Alfred Low for the past 28 years. Incidentally, it is because of Xavier that Low got into the wine business too. He now runs his Vie Du Vin Sdn Bhd based in Kuala Lumpur as he has taken up the Malaysia My Second Home (MM2H) programme to reside here.
After 30 years, Xavier B. A. Guichard’s legacy is firmly uncorked in Malaysia’s hospitality and lifestyle scene. What began as a personal mission has become a lasting contribution, positioning French wine as an integral part of the country’s evolving culinary and cultural landscape.
