In conjunction with the 50th anniversary celebrations of the sister city status of Georgetown and Adelaide, Australia, a long list of interesting activities are being planned. 

The sister city status was signed on Dec 8, 1973 by the then Chief Minister of Penang Tun Lim Chong Eu during the visit by Don Dunstan, premier of South Australia.

To this regard, Penang City Council Mayor Dato Yew Tung Seang held a press conference recently to announce the list of programmes and activities to take place to celebrate the occasion.

Among them are educational programmes, food festivals, cultural events, orchestra presentation, culinary showcase, tree planting ceremony, heritage trail among others.

“For a start, we will be holding a logo designing contest open to members of the public. 

“The contest is open to all Malaysians and Australians and will also offer attractive prizes,” he said.

Georgetown which is the capital of Penang, was founded in 1786 by Captain Francis Light and 50 years later Adelaide was founded by his son, Colonel William Light, so it was only natural that the two should develop a sister city relationship.
