Check out the Christmas decorations put up at Penang City Hall’s entrance at the Esplanade which is made entirely of recycled materials.

The brightly colored structures of Santa Claus and a snowman are in red, white and green befitting the occasion.

At a glance, one would not think that they are made out of recycled materials.

Dubbed the “Upcycle Project”, all materials used are discarded plastic, car tyres, old carpets, pipes, cardboards, broken vases, bottle caps and PVC.

“Since Padang Kota is one of the frequently visited places on the island, the project will help instill the importance of recycling,” said a council press statement.

“We also hope to set up different theme based projects for the up coming festivities like the Chinese New Year and Hari Raya,” read the statement.

The innovative project received the support and encouragement of the Penang mayor Datuk Yew Tung Seang and councillors.
