Two-pronged strategy to revive tourism

Penang is going all out to revive its tourism sector.

Yet another initiative towards this cause is the tie-up with the Malaysia Inbound China Association (MICA) to launch “FOLIDAY” to attract local and also foreign visitors in he long run..

MICA is a non-government and non-profit association to provide its members a platform for exchanging information pertaining to Inbound tourism industry.

The term FOLIDAY means safe travel with own Family, Friends, Fun and Freebie.

They have selected six states with individual themes to launch this campaign, namely Terengganu (islands), Perak (Retreat), Penang (education and heritage), Johor (MICE), Sarawak (Culture) and Sabah (Nature).

Present at the launching ceremony was State Exco for Tourism, Arts, Culture and Heritage, Yeoh Soon Hin, MICA president Dato Dr Angie Ng, Deputy Director of Tourism Malaysia Northern Region, Yoganthiran Manikam, Chief Executive Officer Penang Global Tourism (PGT), Ooi Chok Yan and Vice Chairman of Malaysian Association of Hotels (MAH) Penang, Raj Kumar.

“This campaign encompasses both short and long-term approaches to boost tourism.

“Penang will be promoted as an education and heritage tourism destination of choice not only to interstate travellers, but also to the Chinese market as well, with a major focus on China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong.

“This means that local domestic tourists can visit Penang now with the packages sold in Malaysia, while tourists from the Chinese market will be able to experience Penang later when international borders finally reopen,” said Yeoh.

“MICA is led by 80 of its members consisting of tour operators, tour managers and product owners to visit Penang.

“Among the strategies of promoting Penang as an education and heritage destination. They will also live stream and broadcast to China thru Tourism Malaysia (Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou) on Weibo which has 500K followers.

“They will also do video shooting by influencers with more than 300k followers in Malaysia and video sharing by The China Press with more than 2.2m followers. They will also arrange full page write up in local newspapers namely The Star, The China Press and Nan Yang Siang Pao,” said Ng in her message..

MICA is confident to attract some 50,000 domestic tourists and total receipts of RM15 million to Penang from now till December 2020.
They will partner with hotels like the Double Tree Hotel by Hilton, Equatorial Hotel, The Brown Hotel, Park Royal Resort, The Top, Entopia and Teddy Bear Museum for attractive stay packages and entrance tickets.
