Ministry of Tourism Arts and Culture embarks on townhall session

The Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC) embarked to a national roadshow townhall session to meet stakeholders in the industry to listen to suggestions, grouses and also update them on the current COVID-19 crisis.
The event was part of the newly set-up “Tourism Recovery Committee” to combat and initiative new strategies.
In Georgetown, Penang some 350 representatives from the various hotels, theme parks, transport sector and others attended a meet up session at the UAB Building.
In attendance was MOTAC Secretary General Dato Dr Noor Zari Hamat and his team.
“This special committee was set up to listen, advise and plan new initiatives to prevent the spread of this disease of both locals and tourists with the cooperation of the Ministry of Health.
“At the same time the committee will also look into and plan new and potential markets to replace those lost by the absence of the tourists from China,” said Dr Noor Zani.
Meanwhile, in a press statement, The Minister of Tourism Mohamaddin Ketapi also added that they are working closely with the tourism industry stakeholders so that the tourism industry is not badly affected by this virus.
“We also welcome the initiatives taken by China in combating this disease by restricting tourist from Wuhan City, Hubei Province and the surrounding areas from travelling abroad,” he said.
He also welcomed the Prime Minister’s Tun Mahathir Mohamad’s decision to temporarily suspend Visa on arrival , e-visa and manual visa for Chinese tourists from Wuhan city and Hubei Province.
“Malaysia has the experience of combating these form of diseases and monitoring tourists so that those visiting the country are free from any form of communicable diseases,” he said.
Among the immediate plans to counter any shortfall include the Short Haul Destinations which will focus on countries like Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand and Brunei.
The Medium Haul Destinations initiatives to focus on Middle east, South Asia, India, Japan, Korea and Pakistan and Long Haul Destinations which includes, Eastern Europe, Europe, Germany and Central Asia.
The Ministry will also provide various grants, incentives and discounts to stakeholders to help them in their businesses.
Meanwhile, the Prime Minister is expected to announce the economic stimulus package on Thursday, Feb 27, 2020.
