Penang Bon Odori Festival 2022 a runaway success

The Penang Bon Odori 2022 edition was a runaway success considering it had to take a two-year break due to the pandemic and some recent uncertain developments.
However, leading the launch ceremony was the Governor of Penang Tun Ahmad Fuzi Abdul Razak, along with Penang Chief Minister YAB Chow Kon Yeow, State Exco for Tourism and Creative Economy Yb Yeoh Soon Hin.
Also present was the ambassador of Japan to Malaysia, HE Takahashi Katsuhiko , Consul-General of Japan in Penang Mr Orikasa Hiroyuki, former Finance Minister and Chief Minister of Penang Lim Guan Eng, Penang director for the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (Motac), Jonathan Freddy Bagang, Tourism Malaysia Penang Director Shahrul Aman among others.
Several representatives from the other consulates were also present to lend support.
The colourful ceremony showcased cultural dances, traditional and a galore of food stalls.
As thousands thronged the food outlets and enjoyed the delicacies, many were also seen dressed in traditional Japanese costumes to take in the atmosphere.
“I am delighted and excited to be here in Penang for the Bon Odori Festival. This event also coincides with the 40th anniversary of the “Look East Policy” as well as the 65th anniversary of the establishment of the diplomatic relations between Japan and Malaysia.
“With some 600 Japanese companies investing in Malaysia, approximately 120 Japanese companies are operating in Penang,” Katsuhiko.
He also called on all guests and visitors to enjoy the festivities of the festival.
Among the highlights were dance, music, drum performance, Soran Bushi dance, fireworks and traditional martial arts- the koto showcase.
Meanwhile, Chow expressed his excitement to see the festival being held in Penang again.
“The Bon Odori Festival is a testament of the long-standing friendship shared between Penang and Japan. It is an occasion worthy of celebration as we foster a deeper and stronger relationship,” he said.
