In keeping with their corporate social responsibility (CSR) , the annual Trash Free Hill, a plogging (recreational activity combining jogging and picking up trash) event, was carried out successfully recently.

Lending support was Penang State EXCO for Environment and Welfare, YB Phee Boon Poh.

The annual activity which started in 2018 is aimed to help protect and preserve Penang Hill and its water catchment areas as well as to increase public awareness on the importance of keeping these areas clean from trash and litter.

With over 736 enthusiastic participants, a total of 436kg worth of trash were cleared from the 7 hiking trails from the starting points at Moongate Entrance, Botanic Gardens, Lower Station / Heritage Trail, Hye Keat Estate and Jalan Air Itam.

The plogging activity began at 7am and ended hours later. The end point for all trails was at Dataran, Penang Hill.

This event was supported by the Penang State Government.

Other agencies which collaborated with Penang Hill Corporation (PHC) for this event were the Penang Island City Council (MBPP), Penang Green Council (PGC) and the Center for Global Sustainability Studies and Kampus Sejahtera of Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), Penang Hill Residents’ Association, the hikers’ community and assisted by Penang Botanic Gardens Department, Penang Forestry Department, Malaysia Civil Defence Force (APM), Persatuan BOMBA Sukarela Bukit Bendera, Klinik Kesihatan Bukit Bendera and Polis Diraja Malaysia (PDRM).

Participants were given the necessary items at the starting point to pick up the litter. Trash retrieved from this event were segregated and weighed by the USM team and the data were tabulated and analysed according to the categories of trash collected. After the event, MBPP assisted to clear the trash.

All participants and sponsors received a Trash Free Hill 2022 (TFH2022) Participant Kit each as a token of appreciation for making this event possible for a greener and cleaner Penang Hill.
