Best stay put at home as 100 percent of the world is closed for travel

THIS is an official piece of news. No fake.

According to the UN World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO), almost 100 percent of the world’s global destinations are now under travel restrictions as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.

“This represents the most severe restriction on international travel in history and no country has so far lifted restrictions introduced in response to the crisis,” according to a statement issued by the UNWTO on Wednesday.

This means we cannot be having our holidays in London, Athens, Rome, or even the Northern Lights in Iceland if we do decide to.

Even if we do, gungho as we managed to reach our respective destination by whatever plight that flew us, chances are there may not be any good hotels that befit the five-ratings available for us to put up the night there.

We are not sure but these hotels, possibly may not be financially strong enough to sustain the long-drawn lockdown in their respective country as a result of Covid-19.

Talk about hopping from one country – by land – to another in style in Europe.

In the previous update released last week, not all of Europe or the Americas had implemented travel restrictions.

As of Wednesday, the UNWTO report noted that 83 percent of the 217 UN-recognised countries and territories have had travel restrictions in place for four or more weeks.

Nearly half – 45 percent – of the planet is likewise totally or partially closed to tourists.

Travel restrictions include complete or partial closure of borders; destination-specific travel restrictions barring passengers who have visited or transited through heavily-infected areas; total or partial suspension of flights; and other measures such as quarantine, self-isolation, medical certificates or the suspension of visa issuances.

“This research on global travel restrictions will help support the timely and responsible implementation of exit strategies, allowing destinations to ease or lift travel restrictions when it is safe to do so,” said UNWTO secretary-general Zurab Pololikashvili in a statement.

Guess, we rather be safe and stay put at home until next year as the Year of the Rat runs speedily, at an average of 13 kilometers per hour into the month of May in 2020.

There’s always next year for everyone to travel around the world.
