The Penang State government has proposed to the Federal Government to consider an increase in the cap for RM1,000 income tax relief on spending related to domestic tourism.

State Exco for Tourism, Arts, Culture and Heritage, Yeoh Soon Hin called on the Federal Government to seriously consider the proposal.

“I have written to the Tourism Minister recently to propose the matter in order to stimulate domestic tourism.

“Domestic tourism is the pillar for the tourism industry until the international borders reopen.

“As the chairman of PETACH, I would like to propose for the RM1,000 income tax relief to be increased to a higher sum to spur domestic tourism.

“At the same time, these incentives would provide a motivation for people to travel domestic in the long run even when international borders reopen,” he said in a statement.

Yeoh also added that the move to encourage domestic travel could boost the country’s tourism economy, which is much needed to reactivate every state’s tourism industry including Penang.

“This could serve to ensure recovery can be accelerated which not only supports local businesses, but also protects jobs,” said Yeoh.
