Berjaya’s Tioman Resort ceases operations

BERJAYA Tioman Resort, a popular island resort in Pahang has ceased operation since early this week.

Its management said in a statement that the closure to the COVID-19 Outbreak which has had a heavy impact on tourism.

It said the resort’s employees were given compensation amounting to over RM8 million in accordance with the collective agreement and the Employment Act.

“Throughout this closure, the management will embark on a much-needed major redevelopment to revitalise the resort which is more than 50 years old.

“Our hearts go out to those who have been affected by this closure.”

Once the redevelopment is complete, it added, new employment opportunities would be considered for staff who were retrenched.

A number of hotels, including five-star properties, have ceased operations due to Covid-19 and the ensuing movement control order.

Located on Tioman island, Berjaya Tioman Resort is a 90-minute ferry ride from Mersing Jetty or Tanjung Gemok Jetty.

It features Malay-style chalets with sea or garden views.

A beautiful 18-hole golf course features views of the sea and rainforest.

Berjaya Tioman Resort is one of the hotels under Berjaya Hotels and Resorts. The list of hotels and resorts under the group also include Berjaya Times Square Hotel and ANSA Hotel in Kuala Lumpur, Berjaya Langkawi Resort, Berjaya Makati Hotel and Berjaya Hotel Colombo.
